Gentleman's Dress Code for the Grandstand at Royal Ascot
Gentleman may not have to wear a
morning coat for the Grandstand at Royal Ascot but there is still as strict
dress code to adhere to. In the past the guideline was just to dress smartly,
but now they are more definite giving you a clear picture of the sartorial race
ahead.
Main Rule - Gentlemen are required to wear a suit with a shirt and tie.
Hopefully the sun will be shining and the weather will be warm. To stay cool, a suit in a lighter colour and
lighter fabric will do the trick. This
wool blend (50% wool and 50% polyester) 2 button jacket suit from M&S Superlite
range has the added technology of anti-odour Odegon. The jacket has carbon
patches under each arm which absorb and eliminate odours. The straight leg
trousers has a smart central crease and most importantly for when you’ve eaten
too much from that picnic hamper, a hidden stretch waistband to allow greater
freedom of movement. Colours available: Neutral as shown or light grey.

and gold, and have an internal tech pocket with specially crafted loops for
discreet threading of an earphone cable – maybe to get some secret spy betting
tips? The matching skinny leg trousers feature razor sharp creases and the hem
comes unfinished to allow them to be tailored to your liking.

The most popular suits are the single breasted. So be a little
different and go for the double breasted style. The traditional style is a
boxier look with a longer lapel line ending at the waist and so creating the
illusion of a slimmer and taller you. Great for hiding the larger tummy. Here the Superdry/Timothy Everest collaboration
updates the look for the slimmer figure with the top button fastened making the
lapel line shorter and showing off the trim waist. However there is nothing to
stop you from keeping the top button open and creating that longer line.
Called the Bankrobber, the suit comes in navy herringbone (as shown in
image) and pinstripe. Fabric 100% wool. Both lined in black and gold, and like
the Super Spy suit have an internal tech pocket with specially crafted loops
for discreet threading of an earphone cable. Trousers come unfinished to allow
them to be tailored to your liking.

Shirts & Ties
All the above suits are teamed
with plain white shirts and plain ties, but you can wear coloured and patterned.
Just keep in mind the smart sartorial look when choosing a colour.

Don’t be afraid to experiment and mix your patterns. The above silk navy tie
may be a safe colour but has a floral print to contrast with the shirt. Price £15

Shoes
Unlike the Royal Enclosure, shoes do not have to be black, but they do
have to be smart and polished.

Vivienne Westwood 'man' collection at Royal Ascot Fashion Show 2011
Along with Westwood's women's couture Gold label SS11, some pieces from her 'Man' collection graced the Royal Ascot Fashion Show this year.
White double breasted tailcoat with straight cut trousers.
The title of VW’s SS11 ‘Man’ collection is Climate Change
‘Global as if the world were a smashed mirror’ – with checks worn with other checks and stripes.
White and black Tattersall check wool suit with integrated waistcoat
and baby pink cotton shirt. Trousers have loose tapered legs, belt loops and
two internal back buttons for braces. The pink shirt's high three button Krall collar has been reworked this season in to a button down collar.
Peach and black striped blazer matched with tartan trousers ,
floral shirt and grey waistcoat. The floral shirt is a red flower print on a navy background

Todd Lynn's SS11 Collection at Royal Ascot Fashion Show
This Canadian born designer is loved by the rock music world
and has dressed the likes of U2, the Rolling Stones and Marilyn Manson. He is renowned for his razor sharp androgynous
rock style tailoring for both men and women, and this year he showcased his
SS11 collection at the Royal Ascot Fashion Show.
Mainly of his women's collection, he did manage to sneak in a couple from his men’s
collection.
MacLeod jacket –blazer with diagonal zip fastening features
snake skin leather patches on the shoulders and above the pockets. Zips at the
cuffs and buckles at the back.
Teamed here with McClintock shorts with snake skin leather side panels....
Fabric used is of a linen blend with a touch of elastane to give a better fit.
This is futuristic rock 'n' roll.

You're looking dapper on top with your morning coat and wasitcoat, now to tackle the bottom part:
Trousers:
Always wear traditional morning trousers with a single pleat and
brace buttons.
Don't think any old dress trousers will do.

not to be broken:
If wearing a black morning coat the trousers must be either
striped or hounds tooth.

The Waistcoat for your Royal Ascot Morning Attire
Here is a great opportunity to express your personality with
a touch of colour to your morning attire, but keep to the soft subtle hues.
The waistcoat began a sombre life in Britain when after the
Great Plague and the Great Fire of London; Charles II ordered his court to
replace their opulent French fashions for the plainer more sobering thigh
length vest. After a few years the
wearing of vests spread to the continent and changed from plain to colourful
and patterned. The vest became the waistcoat proper in the 18th
Century when they were shortened above the abdomen.

Firstly you have to wear one and secondly keep the bottom
button undone. The later is more of a sartorial rule accidently started by the
Prince of Wales (later Edward VII) when he left his undone and everyone
followed suit.
Plain wool or linen are
best although silk or satin are also acceptable. But keep the bright colours
and patterns for weddings.
The cut can be either single breasted with or without lapels
or double breasted.
