THOMAS PINK : MEET THE SHIRTMAKERS

‘Meet the Shirtmakers’ introduces the craftspeople from Pink’s UK shirt maker, Smyth and Gibson in Londonderry, showcasing the passion they have for their unique craft.

The film documents the extraordinary craftsmanship, skills, detail and experience that goes into making Thomas Pink’s 1984, Imperial and Made To Order shirts from a very small number of specialised shirt makers who have worked in the industry for decades. Quite literally, 50 pairs of hands with over a millennium of experience.

For Richard Gibson, the co-founder of Smyth and Gibson, a passion for shirtmaking and a penchant for detail are a way of life. “lots of shirtmakers will tell you that they sew with ‘18 stitches to the inch’, but then they look like a ploughed field,” he laughs. “It’s not about the number of stitches, which is just a setting on a machine, but how flat they are.” He insists that the real tests of the shirtmaker’s skill are the tiny - almost indecipherable - elements such as exceptionally flat stitching, buttonholes being of a high density but also hand-trimmed, and the placket of a patterned shirt being matched to the pattern on the body, the way the sleeve is set perfectly into the body of a shirt and that the fine fabrics used hold no tension. “They’re what elevates one shirt above another” notes Gibson. By wearing such a shirt, you are signalling something about yourself to the world -- that craft, quality and details matter to you.

THOMAS PINK MAKES BOLD COLOUR STATEMENT WITH AUTUMN/WINTER 2016 COLLECTION,

On Saturday 9 January 2016, modern British shirt maker Thomas Pink - part of the Moet Hennessey Louis Vuitton group - unveiled Autumn/Winter 16 at the Institute of Contemporary Arts, as part of London Collections Men.

The new season takes inspiration from the romance and refuge of the British coast and countryside, uniting city-dwellers with the urgency for rural escape.

It extracts inspiration from local architecture, industry and environment - exploring built and natural elements we Brits have cultivated on our island nation: from royal retreats to the homespun craft of village industry.

Frederik Willems, Head of Design at Thomas Pink, says; “The collection takes us on a sartorial journey around the UK, visiting some our best-loved coastal towns - from Brighton with its resplendent Royal Pavilion, to Padstow and the Isle of Skye with their rugged coastlines.”

Colour plays a hugely prominent role in Thomas Pink’s Autumn/Winter 16 collection, and to highlight the five key hues of the season - cranberry, navy blue, forest green, mustard and turquoise - the modern British shirt maker showcased looks against impactful block colour screens in corresponding colours.

Florence Torrens, Creative Director at Thomas Pink, says; “The inspiration for this season’s show comes from architect Luis Barragan. Block colour in different planes was a feature of many of his buildings and designs and offered an interesting solution to displaying the collection against the highpoints of colour which run through the season.”

Models wore knitted hats from Johnstons of Elgin, eyewear from EB Meyrowitz and slippers from George Cleverley.

Guests enjoyed G+Ts made using Williams Chase British gin.

Thomas Pink SS16 Presentation at London Collections Men

Thomas Pink unveiled its Spring/Summer 2016 collection at the Institute of Contemporary Arts, as part of London Collections Men. Presented against a botanical backdrop, more potting shed than conservatory, the collection was showcased on models and mannequins

The collection captures the nonchalant mood of the 90s brit pop era – famed for its style-icon musicians and hedonism. Slim tailored silhouettes and a punchy colour palette - spanning indigo, pink, turquoise and citrus - merges tradition and rebellion.

As the season progresses, the collection draws inspiration from Scotland, where, when the sun comes out, vibrant colours reflect off the magnificent landscape and blue skies inspiring a modern take on tartans and plaids with shirting and accessories in tattersalls and blown-up madras checks.

Lightweight outerwear comprises a de-constructed wool navy blazer with shirt fabric lining, a summer tweed linen blazer and a new reversible jacket in light grey ticking stripe with a shell camouflage interior – a spring summer highlight.

A British summer always needs an option for rainy days, in this case a reversible rain mac in Prince of Wales check/navy.

The season finale is inspired by the archetypal seaside resort of Blackpool - with its promenade, piers, fortune-tellers, fairground rides and tattoo parlours. A colour palette of citrus, candy floss pink, turquoise, sky blue and lilac echoes the town’s bright carnival mood, perfectly captured in linen shirting. Ties, silk pocket squares and socks featuring swallow and heart motives and candy stripes perfectly capture the essence of the iconic seaside town.

Thomas Pink AW15 at London Collections:Men

On Saturday 10th January 2015, Thomas Pink, the Jermyn St shirt maker, unveiled its London inspired Autumn/Winter 15 Collection at the Institute of Contemporary Arts, as part of London Collections: Men.

Included in this season’s model line-up was former Scottish international rugby union player and Strictly Come Dancing contestant, Thom Evans.

Presented against the backdrop of a 30ft ‘long bar’ constructed entirely out of paper, each model bartender and punter showcased a different ‘Pink’ look. Built using crisp white 315gsm Kendal Manilla paper manufactured by James Cropper, the unique set up provided the perfect blank canvas for the brand’s expanding ready to wear offering.

Blurring the boundaries between tradition and technology - paper and digital - guests were invited to leave ‘off the cuff’ written reviews on the paper bar using pink pens, which could then be shared via social media.

Autumn/Winter 15 takes influence from Sir Michael Caine - one of London’s sharpest dressers in the 1960’s. The monochromic palette in shades of blue and grey celebrates his pared back style, whilst typically ‘Pink’ punctuations of mustard and raspberry can be found throughout.

Key stories in the shirting range include ‘The Davenport’, a self puppytooth and the ‘The Gibson’, a fine satin twill. This season’s hero piece is the Italian weave ‘Caldicot’ in indigo - a washed Chambray shirt in 80s two fold cotton which stylishly blurs the boundaries between formal and casual.

As the season progresses the collection references the urban metropolis that is London and celebrates its social landmarks and motifs – for example The Coach and Horses in Soho, which was frequented by Lucian Freud and legendary columnist Jeffrey Bernard. The colour palette switches up a notch with raspberry deepening to red, mustard to amber and hues of green emerging, whilst rich melange textures begin to play a key role in the range. Shirting in fine Italian fabrics include the ‘Edward’, a window pane check inspired by London’s iconic telephone boxes, ‘The Bedford’, a complex herringbone weave and the ‘Finlay’, a soft collar brushed poplin with amber overcheck.

Luxurious knitwear designed to be layered comprises the ‘Askew’ – a cashmere wool blend crew neck featuring an oversized tartan – and a selection of cable knits, v-necks and zip necks in luxurious cashmere, wool and merino wool blends in warm colours.
Separately, Autumn Winter 15 includes a cashmere rugby jersey to mark 2015s rugby event of the year - as well as a range of accessories inspired by the great British sport.

This season’s outerwear is travel focused and uses technical fabrics for maximum style and performance. The range includes an Italian made reversible jacket, a bonded wool rain coat and a deconstructed wool hopsack jacket. Autumn/Winter 15 also sees the introduction of a wool/mohair travel suit made from British fabric, which mixes high twist wool yarn with lightweight mohair fibre to create the perfect travel companion.

Traditional British outerwear includes stalwart sports jackets fashioned out of Fox flannel with foggy yellow overchecks, traditional Covert coats with contrasting collars in jewel tones and quilted jackets in collaboration with Lavenham.

As well as eveningwear, the collection incorporates a capsule party range inspired by Alfred Hitchcock’s dashing and directional sartorial style. A quirky colour palette of teal, magenta, indigo and purple compliment rich velvet accessories with silk printed peacock feathers, which sit alongside richly textured Donegal tweed and British Flannel blazers.

In shirting, spots and exaggerated Prince of Wales checks in bold saturated colours start to appear, whilst a super modern dark tartan shirt with bright highlights in an innovative ‘breathable’ fabric provides a point to the season.

Guests including myself and also the models enjoyed cocktails mixed by Pontoon, made using Hennessy Fine de Cognac and garnished with paper foxes, whilst listening to British classics from The Clash, The Rolling Stones and Pulp.

Celebrities included:

Hip hop recording artist Clement Marfo with Hugo Taylor ( of Made In Chelsea fame ) and English author Ed Smith.

And here I am cuddling up to the gorgeous Hugo Taylor!

Continuing the iconic London theme, models wore Dr. Martens tasselled loafers with one or two wearing Thomas Pink logo velvet loafers.

The AW15 collection will be available later in the year
