Maharishi SS17 Mens Collection - Tour D'Afrique

For SS17 Maharishi goes on a Tour of Africa following American and Chinese military presence in the region.

Colours take on a natural palette and have been extracted from the mines of Africa creating earthy swatches. Coltan, a vital mineral used in almost all smartphones and laptops, is central to this collection, as it shines light on natural resources and how they fuel armed conflict across the continent.

Graphics are primitive and portray a sense of naivety using simplistic shapes shaded with bright contrast coloured shading - transferring vividly to embroidery. They are framed with an overlooked staple stitch reminiscent of the works of early Ivorian artists.

Symbolic references to the American Tour of Vietnam can also be seen in the late 60's era style....

.... and technique of African map embroidery.

The seasonal camouflage is Tigerstripe.

Patterns have been expressed in Dense, Sparse and Super Sparse variants.

They have been hand painted on to reclaimed military uniforms in East London as part of maharishi's upcycling program.

Silhouettes include inspirations from traditional African clothing. A prominent stylistic reference to the Djellaba - a hooded long loosed fitting robe from North West Africa. Another is the Djellabiya, a hoodless wide collared and sleeved robe from the Horn of Africa.

Tour D'Afrique references the dualistic existence of maharishi and its core themes, highlighting contrasts in East vs West, nature and handcraft vs technology and, and military vs pacifist. Mother nature is at the core of the maharishi ethos and this collection highlights the importance of her resources and our dependence on them.

Maharishi Menswear AW16 Collection

Titled: Post-Geographic Devotional Uniform & Habits Part II

Last season, Part I collection took inspiration from clothing worn by devotees within religious orders around the world. ( see blog post http://mensstyling.blogspot.co.uk/2015/06/maharishi-ss16-show-london.html )
This season Part II explores beyond - citing subcultures that share devotional and ritualistic observances, a uniform, a moral code and set of beliefs between members.

Insignia and badging are a dominant theme this season: Rocker banners and badges adorn garments and are incorporated in to their seam structures.

Many have been left blank for a sense of abiguity, allowing the wearer devotion to their own cause. Their placement however takes inspiration from military, biker and streetwear application.

Silhouettes reference those worn by gang or crew members. The Sleeveless Stadium jacket updates the upcycled Tri Padded MA jacket pattern to closer resemble a moto jacket.

Also a number of silhouettes have taken exaggerated cues from the robes of Buddhist monks and the blankets of Indian Sadhus.

The Mahatec Parka and Flight Jacket are made from a knitted nylon and polyester micro-fibre that feels natural to the touch but still represents the cutting edge of Japanese technical cloths.
The core colour is entitled Lama and draws inspiration from Tibetan Buddhist monks' habits - reinforcing maharishi's pacifist approach to military design.

Other key colours are: Dusty Pink taking cue from the Pink Panthers of WWII and also natured inspired autumnal rust.

Patterns reinterpret seasonal colours to achieve the core Temple Camouflage colourway, with Autumn Jungle, and Night rounding out the palette.

Bonsai tree shapes growing from heavenly clouds to remind that camouflage has its roots in nature.
Maharishi's perennial camouflage is updated with stretched graphic shapes. The effect mimics natural wood grain texture in abstract. The stretched scale is reminiscent of the spiral and interlocked patterns that occur naturally in trees.

Maharishi AW15 CLIMATE: MONSOON Lookbook

UK label maharishi have collaborated with London based Photographer Alastair Strong to produce a London climate inspired technical shoot.

It highlights a waterproof capsule collection that is integrated into the maharishi AW15 collection, with technical seam sealed jackets featuring Mat_Air™ Nylon in a number of urban silhouettes.
The fabric is proprietary to Italian mill Serates, constructed from a waterproof, breathable membrane that features a porous micro-layer resulting in an incredibly soft touch.
Full protection from the elements is ensured with a plasma finishing process that results in extreme water repellant properties and durability.
It typically lasts three times the number of washing cycles of comparable fabrics, while offering four-way stretch for unimpeded movement, even in closely fitted styles.

The capsule collection is designed with the urban commuter and traveller in mind.
Featuring pack-away hoods, secure pockets, neoprene side panels, ergonomic sleeve constructions, and unbeatable packability.
As per the maharishi ethos, the Integrated Transit Jacket takes design cues from the contemporary Police uniform, with both the Maha Parka and Long Waterproof Parka remaining true to classic military design.
Rounding off looks are a waterproof high-frequency welded nylon backpack and MA phone bag with rubberised water resistant closure.
For those seeking the ultimate in stealth there is the Shinobi Visor, modelled after elements of the US Army’s extreme extended cold weather kit. It features fleece backed reflective glass bead material so effective at returning white light to its source that it can conceal the identity from night-lit CCTV cameras.

MAHARISHI SS16 SHOW London Collections:Men

Post –Geographic Devotional Uniform & Habits: Part 1

The collection takes inspiration from the clothing worn by devotees within religious orders around the world.

Monk’s robes, Judaic prayer strings and capes of the Knights Templar have all been reinterpreted and crossbred with one another to create a pan-global language of devotional uniform.

The colour palette includes purple and golden brown, derived from Roman Catholic traditions and a bright orange referencing the robes of Thai Buddhist monks, whose symbolic usage of this beacon colour is shared with the U.S. Army’s reversible MA1 flight jackets.

The Prayer Fishtail Parka updates this military classic with extended zip pullers at the underarms and pockets creating trailing cords evoking the tassles of prayer shawls or rope belted robes.

The 3XDRY long sweat poncho is a utilitarian loose silhouette recalling the robes of eastern monks and the 11th Century Knights Templar, yet is also inspired by a staple of military outfitting re-imagined in a water repellent technical knitted organic cotton with classic sportswear finishing.

On the front row were: Ghetts, Tinie Tempah and Dumi

Maharishi AW15 Menswear Collection

In an era of escalating surveillance by government agencies and corporations, Maharishi seek deep cover and look for inspiration in the way of the ninja - the original masters of stealth.

Maharishi interprets the ninja garments from one of combat to 21st century utility with cuts and detailing specifically suited to the needs of the international traveller.

Keeping the international traveller's arms free, jackets and coats hung behind the models' back with the clever inclusion of shoulder straps.

The ninja uniforms inspire elongated silhouettes including the above the knee length crew sweats and extended long pants as well as dropped crotches, fitted calves, built in mittens and integrated fitted hoods.

Camouflage print is of the Bonsai Forest with a dotted pattern recalling the techniques of the artists Gerorge Seurat and Roy Lichenstein and used to disrupt video surveillance systems

A baseball style cap can be pulled down and worn over the face - the mesh eye covering still affords perfect vision for the wearer.

Colour palette changed from ninja black to army khakis

Here the Bonsai is cleverly hidden in the camo print.
.

Quilted thermal layers worn under old battle uniforms were re cut and reused to create a jackets and coats with a patchwork of different shades and shaped pieces. As though joining forces, these quilted pieces originally from different uniforms belonging to historically opposing forces come together to create one garment..
