TURNBULL & ASSER - London Collections Men - Autumn Winter 2016

AW16 - THE ARTIST AND THE ARCHITECT
“Do not fear to be eccentric in opinion, for every opinion now accepted was once eccentric.” ― Bertrand Russell

For Autumn/Winter ‘16, Turnbull & Asser exploits the contrasting elements of two different worlds. Inspired by a reading list that includes George Orwell’s ‘1984’, Ayn Rand’s ‘The Fountain Head’ and Robert Louis Stevenson’s ‘The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde’, T&A have created two conflicting protagonists, known simply as ‘The Artist’ and ‘The Architect’.

Their showcase juxtaposes the colourful chaos of ‘The Artist’ and the monochromatic simplicity of ‘The Architect’ through an interesting blend of pattern and texture.

The Artist
The Architect
Blurring the lines between formal and informal, suits can be easily worn as separates to enhance pattern and textile combinations.

Continuing their relationship with Fox Brothers, they have injected a riot of colour into both lightweight wool blazers and overcoats, while patterned wool bombers and contemporary waxed cotton jackets add depth to the collection.

Rainwear is kept simple with exclusive weather-proofed shirting cloths in lightweight mac silhouettes.

Formalist shirting is inspired by architectural schematic sketches and emphasises the power of the simple check by playing with a micro-to-macro scale. Imagining the wardrobe of Brutalist architects, small introductions of stripped-back monochrome and moody navy reference to their 60s and 70s archive.

On the opposing side, the Informalist designs add playful twists to classic poplin stripes and blue paint stroke jacquards, inspired by a bespoke order by Pablo Picasso. Colour is evident with rainbow splashes over checks, lightly brushed cottons and luxury denim/cashmere blends.

The necktie has become a canvas for creativity – brought to life are an incredible array of motifs including intricate drawings of London’s most iconic buildings alongside psychedelic scribblings.
The humble pocket square has been elevated to a work of art through the mega-square, an elaborate 140cm² blend of wool and silk that can be worn as scarves.

Turnbull & Asser x Thunderbirds - Limited Edition‏ Ties & Pocket Squares

The pieces revolve around the ITV-owned archive sketches featuring the famous five vehicles, as well as Lady Penelope’s car. These have been re-worked in fine line drawings to form recurring motifs for pocket squares.
Inspired by Brains’ iconic glasses, a focused range of geometric ties have also been designed, each lined with an imprint of the Thunderbirds comic strip. The selection is completed with a bolder pocket square that echoes the cartoon imagery.

“Thunderbirds was a T.V show that represented an amazing time when a generation of children could suspend belief to see a bunch of puppets save the world. As a child it was the vehicles that were the main appeal, and everyone had their favourite. I hope we have done the Tracy brothers and the Anderson’s justice with our tribute to the Thunderbirds” Dean Gomilsek-Cole Head of Design at Turnbull & Asser.

TURNBULL & ASSER AW15 LC:M PRESENTATION‏

Turnbull & Asser delve into a provocative world of espionage for Autumn Winter 2015 with a collection that boldly celebrates this movement and the iconic films which encapsulate it. From the obscure Dandy in Aspic to the iconic Ipcress File Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, sharp eyed tailoring references can be found throughout the collection to further explore Turnbull & Asser’s concept of Formalist Informalist dressing but with the introduction of eveningwear for 2015, known as The Nocturnalist

The Formalist:

The Formalist shirting has a simple fresh colour palette which disguises the complexity of the “code” in their weaving.

Smudged stripes accompany deconstructed and re-matched checks with familiar silhouettes being subtly updated.

Maintaining their colourful Jermyn Street roots, the characteristically bold colour palette has been put through a “foggy” London filter to give it an authentic Cold-War period feel for wardrobe staples such as coats and tailoring.

Taking inspiration from Turnbull & Asser’s vast archive, intricate tie weaving reflects the imperfect patterns of this period alongside contemporary geometric repeats and modern micro neat patterns whilst using captivating game playing imagery. Pocket squares have become part of an ever-unravelling puzzle, as code breaking and game playing imagery are hidden and only apparent on closer, more dangerous, inspection.

The Informalist collection encourages the opportunity to build beautiful textured layers.

Shirts explore a range of bold colours, in contemporary settings, that are softened with muted melange tones and brushed for warmth. A new line of cotton/cashmere blended yarns are included for a luxury edge to The Informalist collection presented in shirts and pyjamas.

Softly tailored blazers are invitingly tactile with tweeds and wool corduroys given a new lease of life with exclusive designs from the best British and Italian mills. Bi-colour yarns create new interest in cable sweaters with a comforting chunkiness that makes them a viable alternative to outerwear on milder autumn days.

 The Nocturnalist:

Less discreet, and in a nod to the often flamboyant master criminals, Turnbull & Asser introduce an eccentric array of exquisite woven silk smoking jackets, in a seductively smoky palette of Black, Midnight and Deep Burgundy contrasted together with sharp white dress shirts. The single-breasted jackets, in shawl or peaked lapel, are all made in the London tailoring workshop and constructed in woven silk jacquard patterns.

Ranging from vintage micro repeats taken from the 50’s dress archives to the game-playing and spy motifs reflecting the season’s theme.  All pieces are limited edition, adding to the air of exclusivity in the collection.

Sitting alongside the smoking jackets there is an equally intriguing selection of luxury woven silk gowns.
