“Maurice Lacroix Strait of Magellan Expedition” sets a world record!
Zurich, 20.02.2013. Two
dentists from Zurich have negotiated the 560 km long Strait of Magellan on
kiteboards, setting a world record under extreme weather conditions and taking
the sport of kiteboarding into a new dimension. Maurice Lacroix supported the
venture under the slogan “YOUR TIME IS NOW.”
Strong winds, icy temperatures and persistent poor
visibility certainly created difficult conditions for brothers Geza and André
Scholtz, two dentists from the city of Zurich who are passionate about kite
surfing. Their great dream – to navigate the Strait of Magellan by kiteboard –
became reality on January 7, 2013. “We congratulate the expedition team,
who have proved once again that we should always hold on to our dreams in order
to make them come true. In spite of the difficult conditions, the time was
right for the team to rise above all the challenges,” says Marc Gläser, Managing
Director of Maurice Lacroix SA, which supported the project.
The Strait of Magellan
lies between the southernmost tip of South America and the island of Tierra del
Fuego. It is named after the Portuguese mariner Ferdinand Magellan, who, in 1520,
was the first to sail through the strait in the course of his voyage around the
world. Since the opening of the Panama Canal in 1914, the strait has been used
only by large transport vessels that cannot pass through the canal. With its
icy water temperatures, roaring winds and poor visibility, the strait is
regarded as one of the most difficult and dangerous navigation routes. The passage
demanded full commitment from the entire team. A record achievement in terms of
sporting endurance, bringing with it the reward of a place in history as the “Maurice
Lacroix Strait of Magellan Expedition”.

Oliver Spencer AW13/14 collection
Oliver Spencer turned to German art theorist Joseph Beuys
and his involvement with the 1960s Fluxus Movement for his inspiration. Like
the Fluxus Movement which saw the idea of art as a game for the artist to
reconfigure the rules; Oliver Spencer reconfigures the style rules:
A shearling jacket is
dandified into the long cutaway style with a high neck making the exposed wool
reminiscent of an Elizabethan ruffle collar worn by Sir Walter Raleigh. This
jacket is then dressed down with a citrus orange top and thick woollen jogging
style trousers rolled up to show chunky work boots.
The shearling jacket made a few more appearances but always in a different style
Looking warm, cosy and casual in the padded bomber jacket
style. Teamed with navy joggers and hot mustard accessories.
A dapper look as a slim fit leather jacket with just a shearling
collar. Both smart and casual trousers
in the collection sported rolled up hems exposing socks and Spencer’s capped
toe Oxford boots and classic shoes.
Black and grey horizontal striped trousers similar to the
stereotype prisoner outfit are matched with a tailored jacket and slim fit
short coat. The jacket is an updated version of the Nehru style with
contrasting upturned collar
The use of horizontal stripes was prevalent ranging from the
above trousers, to shirts and to one wide colour block stripe of bright burgundy
bringing an accent of colour to a pea coat.
It was stripes galore for the finale piece: Wide horizontal
stripes of charcoal, mid grey and bronze on a single breasted wool suit teamed
with a red and black striped tie. Definitely a statement outfit.
